Everyone knows that self-care takes a back seat whenever we become anxious and tense. So many students in college can sympathize with this as they stay up all night in the library trying to complete a paper due the next day, fueled by soda and pizza. But how many people stop thinking about the long-term consequences of the stressful situations?

First, stop and think about your diet when you’re stressed. Likely it consists of fast food and other calorie-laden snacks, since we often don’t have the time to cook a nutritious meal when we’re busy. If you eat snacks you will find that after the quick carbohydrate burst wears off you crash. The over consumption of unhealthy foods promotes obesity but can also lead to high blood pressure and blood sugar levels. This vicious cycle perpetuates itself over and over again.

Stress also affects relationships due to lack of time spent with one’s partner, possible sexual dysfunction, and marital discord. Marriages where one or both partner is in a high-stress job, like doctors or lawyers, are significantly more likely to end in divorce.

Even though short periods of stress may result in a lot of good sleep, prolonged periods of stress and total exhaustion from worry can result in sleeping disorders. Unable to fall asleep at night, or wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. People may find that suddenly they lie in bed worrying. A lack of restful sleep during the night makes an individual more prone to error the next day, and makes it harder for one to deal with challenges that require mental alertness.

Continuous anxiety certainly has a negative effect on your mental health. Anxiety disorders and depression can result from the pressures of work and home, which can be devastating to the persons affected and their families. If you find that you have lost interest in things you once loved have guilt about how you’re feeling or have suicidal thoughts, it is essential that you get help from family and, ideally, by trained professionals.

Learning how to effectively cope with stress when it happens is the initial step to take so that you may prevent experiencing more difficult circumstances later on. Getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, setting aside time for a family meal, and making sure to take the occasional vacation day are all ways in which you can alleviate the pressures of a stressful job. The key is finding something that works for you, and then making it a priority. Don’t take your health for granted, it is a very important aspect of your life.
