Following a recent report released by the surgeon general stating that over two thirds of the population is overweight, there has been a flurry of diet plans and weight loss schemes put forth on the internet and in magazines. A more recent method has been taking laxatives to lose weight. This is by far one of the weaker plans.
Like other medications, laxatives do have a specific purpose. That is, they have been developed for the relief of constipation. But if taken on a daily basis, these drugs could limit or destroy the body’s ability to move waste matter through the colon.
Laxatives affect the end of the digestive system, once your food has been digested. This means that all of the calories consumed in a meal have already been absorbed into the body before any remaining material gets to this part of the digestive tract.
Since the bowel is open-ended, it is only able to contain a specific quantity of material. Any method used to relieve constipation, even a high colonic, will only successfully remove a certain amount of waste. Laxatives will only have an impact on the lower part of the bowels, as such they are unable to move anything more than a colonic out of the body.
Changes in eating and exercise habits are the best way to bring about weight loss. Creating a calorie deficit, burning more calories than one takes is the only way to create weight loss.
Long term lifestyle changes must be made at a base level. One can not ‘go on a diet’ and starve oneself until the desired weight is lost, then resume the same old habits. You will only succeed in putting the weight back on. The weight you lost would return, leaving you where you started or maybe even heavier. Taking laxatives to lose weight is an even worse idea than starving yourself, and it is a lot more dangerous.
