Technically, agoraphobia means fear of the market. In reality, an individual suffering from agoraphobia is afraid to go anyplace not only to the market. At least this is true in many cases. Sometimes those who are agoraphobic have fear of visiting just certain places.
Most times, agoraphobia starts with the patient being afraid to go to just one venue. Before long, he will fear visiting one more place. As time goes on, he becomes fearful of visiting somewhere else. Then, he will fear still another place. After this trend has developed for a while, he will find himself locked in his home.
Agoraphobia does not exist on its own. It needs panic attacks to survive. The simple fact is, agoraphobia is not possible without panic because one who “fears,” as in “fear of the marketplace,” leaving home actually experiences panic when leaving home. Simple fear does not impel one to stay at home for the rest of his life.
Without a doubt agoraphobia is caused by panic attack disorder. Without panic attacks, there is no underlying cause of agoraphobia. Obviously, when one sets about overcoming agoraphobia, he must first defeat panic attack disorder.
When someone has his first panic attack it is never expected and the sufferer does not know what is happening to him. Because the place where this attack occurs will always bring bad memories with it, the sufferer of the attack will avoid returning to the place it happened.
Of course, it could be this will be the only panic attack this person will experience. If so, there will be no harm done. However, the problem is the sufferer is liable to have more panic attacks. As this happens he will accumulate more places he will no longer want to visit.
For some patients, it may not only be fear of places being developed. Sometimes it is an event that is blamed instead. .It doesn’t matter what type of event it is, it is likely to become synonymous with the panic attack in the sufferer’s mind. The event could be as high pressure as a job interview or as low key as Thanksgiving dinner at a relative’s house. It makes no difference if it a place or an event the sufferer blames for the panic attack, all that matters is the sufferer of the attack will have developed another fear of something outside his house.
A panic attack brings with it many very disconcerting symptoms. They make the sufferer feel as if death is imminent. It is, of course, very difficult to accept such feelings. So if in the sufferer’s mind, it is an event behind the unwanted symptoms, he will choose to not attend such events.
Agoraphobia can be defeated by bringing the patient back to the places he fears visiting or the events he is afraid to attend. He should only visit for a little while in the beginning stages of this therapy. Panic attacks can be defeated by simply letting them occur whenever they are inclined to. Trying to fight or run away from them makes them powerful. Remaining passive to them weakens them. An attack of panic cannot build in a person’s life if he has no fear of them. Panic attacks thrive on fear and when we decide we will not fear them, they will cease to exist. Agoraphobia too, will go away after it has no panic attack disorder driving it.
